Apple Seeking Trademarks for Wristwatch Device

Apple has added fuel to the speculation that it is working on some sort of wrist-watch based device, as it seeks a trademark in Japan for the "iWatch".

Citing a filing with the Japan Patent Office, Bloomberg News reported that Apple is seeking to protect the brandname when applied to products such as a handheld computer or watch. As with most trademarks, Apple has to limit its scope to the products it is likely to be applied to.

The trademark application was filed early last month, but only made public a few days ago.

Apple has long been rumoured to be working on such a device, and has dropped hints recently that it has new products away from its core handset/computer hardware market.

It's now generally expected that the iWatch would be some sort of remote control for an iPhone, as opposed to being a fully self-contained smartphone.

"New connected devices, whether they are TVs, cars or other devices are likely to be first adopted by high income consumers, over whom Apple dominates globally." Tavis McCourt, an analyst at Raymond James & Associates, wrote in a research report.

Samsung is also known to be working on a smartphone/watch device, and Sony recent updated its own Android smartphone remote watch control.
