BlackBerry CEO confirms PlayBook tablet won’t be getting BB10

BlackBerry CEO confirms PlayBook tablet won’t be getting BB10

Sorry, BlackBerry PlayBook owners, there’s no BlackBerry 10 for you.
During the company’s first quarter earnings call today, chief executive Thorsten Heins confirmed that the PlayBook tablet won’t see a BB10 upgrade. Heins cited “performance and user experience concerns” for the move — which isn’t a huge surprise, since the PlayBook’s hardware is several years old.
BlackBerry announced a disappointing $84 million Q1 loss this morning, so the company certainly has more important things to focus on rather than supporting a tablet that few people have bought.
While it’s not surprising to see BlackBerry pull back PlayBook support, the announcement is somewhat ironic. The PlayBook’s operating system, developed by BlackBerry subsidiary QNX, was our first glimpse at a modern and multi-tasking focused from the company when it debuted in April 2011.
Without the PlayBook’s OS, there would be no BlackBerry 10.
